The Magical Origins of the Name Galata
There are fascinating rumors that historians focus on regarding the origin of the name Galata. In ancient times, the region was called "Sykai" (The Fig Orchard) due to the abundance of fig trees. However, one of the most common beliefs is that the name derives from "galaktos," which means milk in Greek. During the Byzantine period, this area was a lush green field housing the empire's dairies and milk market.
Another strong view is that it comes from the Italian word "calata" (a road or pier descending to the sea) under the influence of the Genoese. Considering Galata's historical slopes extending to sea level and its commercial past, this theory makes a lot of sense.
An Architectural Journey from the Tower of Christ to the Present
The tower we admire today actually carries the heritage of the first structure built by Emperor Justinian in 528 AD. Although the original structure has not survived to the present day, the current tower, rebuilt in 1348 by the Genoese under the name "Tower of Christ" (Turris Christi), was a very important part of the walls separating Constantinople from the Bosphorus at that time.
"Surviving countless earthquakes throughout history and the great fire of 1831, the tower reshaped itself according to the spirit of each era. Two more floors were added to it during the restoration in the period of Mahmud II."
Taking on many different functions over time, the structure was used as a prison during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, a center allocated to the Mehter (Ottoman Military Band) for a period, and as a lighthouse in the second half of the 20th century. Even though it lost its courtyard, gates, and shore-descending city walls due to zoning works carried out around it in 1864, it has never lost its grandeur.

History Beneath the Wings: Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi
The most talked-about story in the centuries-defying history of the tower is, of course, the flight of Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi. According to accounts by Evliya Çelebi, inspired by the works of Leonardo Da Vinci, Ahmed Çelebi managed to fly from the Galata Tower to Doğancılar Square in Üsküdar in 1638 using wings he made himself. Commemorated with the nickname "Hezarfen"—meaning "thousand-witted/knowledgeable" because of his immense learning—Çelebi's daring act is one of the building blocks of the tower's romantic and mysterious aura.
