Legendary Mansion Mizzi On Sale
One of the most magnificent buildings defining Büyükada’s silhouette, the Mizzi Mansion, awaits its new owner with its timeless architecture located on Çankaya Street, Nizam Neighborhood.
With its brick-covered facade, characteristic tower structure, and splendor known locally as "Al Palas," this Grade 1 registered historical building is not only a property but also a significant cultural heritage.
One of the key figures in the mansion's history is the Maltese-born British lawyer and publisher Lewis Mizzi. Mizzi, a prominent figure in Istanbul's Levantine community, had a strong interest in astronomy, and as a result, the mansion’s tower once served as an observatory.
The mansion was renovated and reconstructed by the renowned Italian architect Raimondo D’Aronco. Mizzi Mansion reflects a revivalist style parallel to Raimondo D’Aronco’s early works. Particularly on the front facade, the spirit of England's Late Victorian Era architecture is clearly evident. During the Victorian period, defined broadly from the mid to late 19th century, various historical styles were commonly combined, especially in suburban residences.
After passing into Mizzi family's ownership, the mansion underwent a two-phase intervention by Raimondo D’Aronco, tailored specifically to Lewis Mizzi’s personal tastes. The first phase occurred between July 1893 and July 1894, when the tower and observatory were added. The second phase, between 1894 and 1895, involved the comprehensive renovation of the mansion, focusing particularly on the front facade.
In 1896, photographs showcasing the mansion’s renovation project and metalwork were exhibited at the Torino Art Triennial (Triennale d’Arte di Torino).
“Famous lawyer Lewis Mizzi was also a passionate astronomy enthusiast. He would spend hours in the tower observing planets through his telescope, possibly hoping to catch sight of Halley’s Comet.
Born in 1870 in Tatavla, Istanbul, later working in England and Paris, Evgenios Andoniadis, an esteemed scientist and astronomer, became world-renowned as a founding member of the British Astronomical Association and director of its Mars Section, and was honored with the French Legion of Honor. At a young age, he observed and named the craters of the planet Mars, previously thought to be valleys, from Lewis Mizzi’s observatory in Büyükada. One crater each on Mars and the Moon is still named after him.”
With over 11 rooms, annexes, tower, storage, and a cistern, covering a total closed area of 1,089.41 m² within a 1,560 m² plot, the mansion is surrounded by an extraordinary garden filled with jasmine, bougainvillea, and wisteria, offering breathtaking sea and sunset views.
Constructed presumably around the 1860s as a masonry building, the mansion features an exceptional interior layout, including three floors and a tower section. The mansion has been meticulously restored and structurally reinforced by a team of experts, preserving its original character. It stands as a unique property ideal for use as a residence, boutique hotel, museum, or similar social purposes, beyond all imagination.
